Switch on the television in Germany and sooner or later you will be viewing a program broadcast from Cologne. Cologne is Germany's TV capital, and at the same time, the leading radio centre. In rough proximity of the cathedral, almost 30% of Germany's domestic broadcasts are produced and three of the nation's most successful radio programs are produced in Cologne. Serving as the foundation for media development in the metropolis are nine broadcasting companies. The West German Television (WDR) is the largest broadcasting company in continental Europe and RTL ranks as Europe's biggest advertiser. The Deutsche Welle is transmitted worldwide, where as Deutschlandfunk only airs throughout Germany. In addition, Cologne is also home to Super RTL, Vox and the three music channels VIVA, Viva Plus and Onyx. No other city in Europe plays host to as many broadcasting stations. Emerging rapidly around these major broadcasters has been a vibrant private film and TV industry. Altogether Cologne boasts some 350 film and TV production companies we all as 600 ancillary companies. The majority of these firms operating in the film, TV and multimedia sector have grown up over the past decade. In comparison to other media centres throughout Germany, Cologne has also generated the greatest growth in the industry. Altogether the media sector employs over 50,000 people and TV and film forms one of the key industrial sectors in the city and region. The chief speciality of Cologne's locally-produced programs is entertainment, such as talkshows, comedies, soaps and series. The most successful crime series on German TV have all been filmed in Cologne. This is hardly surprising in the view of the fact that the city has best locations, regardless of the topic. The municipal authority provides expert support to any company wishing to shoot in Cologne and cooperates closely with the state of North Rhine-Westphalia's film-promotion initiative the Filmstiftung NRW. Launched to handle the international marketing of this wide range of programs is Cologne Screenings, a successful broadcasting tradefair. Given that the city can provide the necessary, comprehensive infrastructure for staging large-scale productions, Cologne serves as the ideal location for realising many film projects intended for the international market. Regardless of the requirements Cologne has the necessary studio capacities and resources for post-production and synchronisation. The technical basis for successful content production is furnished by a range of regional and national telecommunications providers. For example, the CityNet Cologne, operated by the regional carrier NetCologne is regarded as the most modern and efficient city communications networks in Europe. In addition to the technical service providers, the local financial sector has also adapted its range of services to cater for the local media industry. The local branches of local savings bank, the Stadtsparkasse Köln, has provided funding to the tune of around one billion DM for film, TV and the media. The most important resource for the media centre Cologne is skilled personnel. Consequently, training and education in media studies are regarded as an integral element of any schemes to promote the local media industry. Actively participating in many educational and training projects in the media sector , the city of Cologne is cooperating with state institutions such as the Internationale Filmschule and the Academy of Media Arts, the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln. The other key benefit provided by the city to the media industry cannot be calculated in monetary terms: namely a vibrant atmosphere. Media producers and their staff have come to value Cologne's urbane flair and creative ambience. And because of the informal and relaxed manner of life in the city, new cooperations and joint ventures are constantly being launched. Cologne can ensure a continual cross-over between the various media segments, which elsewhere would remain in isolation. Source:www.koeln.de
